Medical Practitioner (Doctor)

Medical practitioners, commonly referred to as doctors, are essential to the Australian healthcare system. They play a vital role in delivering high-quality care and are responsible for:

  • Diagnosing and treating physical and mental illnesses, disorders, and injuries
  • Recommending preventative actions and health maintenance strategies
  • Referring patients to medical specialists, allied health professionals, and social or support workers

Doctors in Australia complete at least 4 years at a university or accredited medical school, followed by a compulsory 12-month internship. After internship, most doctors enter further specialist training, which can include areas like general practice, surgery, or psychiatry.

International Doctors or Specialists

Doctors trained outside Australia or New Zealand must meet specific eligibility criteria to practise in Australia. There are three primary pathways available for International Medical Graduates (IMGs):

1. Competent Authority Pathway

Designed primarily for non-specialists but also available to some specialists. This pathway is available to doctors with qualifications from:

  • United Kingdom
  • Ireland
  • United States
  • Canada
  • New Zealand

2. Specialist Pathway

This is for overseas-trained specialists who are either:

  • Seeking recognition of their specialist qualifications
  • Applying for an area-of-need specialist position in Australia

3. Standard Pathway

This pathway is for IMGs who are not eligible for either the Competent Authority or Specialist pathways. It is used for those who want to practise in Australia as non-specialist medical practitioners and must undergo further assessment and training.
