Locum Doctors
Depending on the hospital, one of the following is most typical
Medical professionals with complete, unconditional registrations, starting with RMO1, are eligible for locum tenens positions.
We offer both short-term and long-term locum work across Australia in:
- Public hospitals
- Private hospitals
- General practitioner offices
You can locum anywhere in Australia if you are fully registered as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Medical Indemnity Requirement
Whether working in public or private hospitals, holding your own medical indemnity insurance is mandatory.
The required level of coverage depends on your area of practice and specialty, and should be discussed directly with your indemnity provider.
Rates of Pay
Hourly rates are provided at the time of advertisement and may vary depending on:
- Your level of experience
- Urgency of the hospital’s need
Typical rates range from $80 to $150 per hour, with crisis shifts sometimes paying higher rates. Our locum doctors are contacted quickly when such opportunities become available.
Payment Methods
Payment is processed differently depending on the hospital's requirements. The most common options include:
1. ABN (Contractor)
As a contractor, you must submit an invoice after completing your shift. We manage this for you at BPML.
2. PAYG (Employee)
As a hospital employee:
- You’ll need to submit tax file declarations, bank account details, and other relevant forms to HR.
- Submit a completed timesheet to medical administration or HR.
- Payment will be processed via EFT in the next fortnightly payroll cycle.
