Locum Doctors

Medical professionals with complete, unconditional registrations, starting with RMO1, are eligible for locum tenens positions.

In public and private hospitals as well as general practitioner offices around Australia, we have both short-term and long-term work available for locum physicians. You can locum anyplace in Australia if you are fully registered as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, or AHPRA.

Having your own medical indemnity is mandatory whether you work in a public or private hospital. The amount of coverage necessary for your specialisation and line of practice should be discussed with your medical indemnity provider.

Hourly rates are provided at the time of advertisement and differ across shifts. Rates might vary based on expertise level and how quickly the hospital needs to fill the shift, from about $80 to $150 per hour. Our locums are swiftly contacted when these become available, and crisis rates may be higher.

Depending on the hospital, one of the following is most typical

(a)  ABN: Since the locum is working as a contractor, you must submit an invoice at the end of your shift. We handle this for you at BPML.

(b)  Pay As You Earn (PAYE): As an employee of the hospital, the locum must complete tax file declarations, bank account information, and other forms and submit them to the HR. A timesheet needs to be completed and turned in to medical administration or HR. In the hospital's upcoming fortnightly pay cycle, you will receive payment by electronic funds transfer (EFT). As soon as your shift is confirmed, we will inform you of the necessary steps.
